AN elderly pedestrian died after he was catapulted 10 yards onto a pavement following an accident with a tipper waggon.
Joseph Cocker, aged 88, was dealt a glancing blow by the lorry as he crossed Falcon Street, Bolton, on the outskirts of the town centre.
Mr Cocker, of Hillcot Road, Astley Bridge, was taken to Bolton Royal Infirmary. He died despite frantic efforts to save his life.
Mr Cocker was involved in the accident after he had walked two miles from his home towards the town centre. Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened near the junction with Higher Bridge Street, shortly before 2pm on Saturday.
A police spokesman said Mr Cocker was involved in an accident with a tipper lorry towing a trailer. The driver of the waggon 27-year-old Patrick O'Donnell of Allingham Street, Longsight, Manchester, was not injured.
