SIR: I saw that excellent letter about the history of the Jeep. I was a civilian employee of the US Air Force. I remember in the 1950s taking US Air Force material to Melias in Bolton: US trucks to be modified by them, gearboxes to be re-built and engine heaters also to be repaired.
They also modified the steering on Michigan's giant loaders.
