AN angry pensioner claims his tap water is still unfit to drink more than two weeks after he first complained to North West Water.

As reported in the BEN, Richard Kay, 72, refused to drink the water, complaining it tasted "off" and smelled like bleach.

Since then Mr Kay and his wife Patricia have been carrying home bottled water from the supermarket.

Mr Kay has written to NWW and industry watchdog Ofwat demanding compensation for the money he has spent on bottled water.

Water company engineers have been doing maintenance work on pipes in the area around the couple's home in Cloverdale Square, Doffcocker.

Mr Kay said the water was turned off briefly earlier last week and when it came back on the taste and smell had gone.

But within a few hours the problem had returned.

A NWW spokesman said: "We are in touch with Mr Kay about this matter. He may find it unpleasant to taste but it is certainly safe to drink."

She added that the water could be made more palatable by chilling the water in the fridge with a slice of lemon in it.
