POLICE are appealing for information to help catch the burglar who shot a brave Bolton man in a bungled raid yesterday.

Geoffrey Shannon, aged 55, was shot in the shoulder during a struggle with the burglar who was brandishing an air pistol.

As reported in last night's BEN, Mr Shannon confronted the intruder when he heard noises coming from the bathroom window at about 1.15am and tackled him.

He was shot while trying to disarm him and was also hit with the butt of the gun.

The gun used in the incident, a wristwatch and balaclava belonging to the raider were left behind and police are appealing for any information connected with the incident.

The watch is an Avia Polar Star with an expanding silver bracelet and bearing the the model numbers 5ATM and 160702.

The gun is a Webley Nemesis .22 calibre air pistol about 10 inches long. It is silver and black and appears to be almost new.

The raider is probably suffering from facial injuries and is described as of slim build, 5ft 11ins tall, aged about 20 years old, with short fair to blond hair.

He was wearing a black leather windjammer-style jacket.

Det Insp Tony Vietch said: "Anyone giving information may be liable to a Greater Manchester Crimestoppers trust award."
