IN the second round of the BSF VETS LEAGUE Sam Ashworth Trophy Cup Hayward won only their second match of the season to knock out Walkden AFC.

Barry Culf gave Hayward the lead midway through the first half but the visitors equalised through a Pete Kershaw effort.

It took a penalty, converted by Mick Fitzpatrick, five minutes from time to restore Hayward's lead before they scrambled a third in last few seconds.

In the final of the Divisional Cup for the top league, Barnes Passage scored three times but still lost the match because of two own goals.

Although Bolton Wyresdale had the upper hand for most of the match, they had to depend on the generosity of their opponents who could only find a single reply with a dazzling effort from the left wing. Great interest is being shown from new teams for next season with Little Lever, Hindsford, Whinney Hill, Turton and Ladybridge having submitted applications to join.

The semi-final matches in the Sam Ashworth Trophy will take place next Sunday when Hayward will meet British Aerospace at Harriet Street and Bolton Wyresdale will meet the winners of the tie between Little Hulton United and Barnes Passage at Daisy Hill.
