GREATER Manchester Hazards Centre is holding a Workers' Memorial Day on Sunday.

It is to commemorate all those who have died because of their work - whether because of an accident at work or from an occupational illness.

There will be speakers, the planting of a tree and the unveiling of a plaque at a ceremony which starts at 11am at the PumpHouse, People's History Museum in Bridge Street, Manchester.

Speakers include MEP Glyn Ford, Bill Connor, Deputy General Secretary of USDAW, Frank Weaver, Regional Secretary of UCATT and Arthur Berry of the GPMU. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Hazards Centre said: "We will particularly be remembering the 22 people killed at work and the 716 people severely injured in 1994/95 in Greater Manchester and the countless thousands who suffer and die from illnesses caused by work each year.

"We will be pledging to continue to fight to bring to justice those employers who recklessly and negligently risk the lives of their employees."
