25 YEARS AGO

BOLTON'S central pedestrian precinct will be permanent from next Wednesday. Transport Minister Mr John Peyton has issued the necessary order, and the Town Council can now go ahead with its £60,000 plan to add covered walks, trees and other attractive features to the precinct. Although there has been a lot of opposition to the scheme, from traders and individuals, the findings of a public inquiry decided that the arguments of objectors "did not outweigh" those of the council.

50 YEARS AGO

DOCUMENTS discovered in Berlin revealed today that the Germans planned to strike at Southern and South-east England with 22 divisions in the fall of 1940. Seventeen additional divisions were to have been in reserve. The troops were to sail from Ostend, Dunkirk, Calais, Boulogne and the mouth of the Somme, to land on the Kentish coast between Margate and Hastings. Others were to land between Brighton and Portsmouth, and airborne landings were to be made just north of the Romney Marshes.

125 YEARS AGO

MR George Whittaker, of Breightmet, bleacher, recently commenced an action against Mr James Ashcroft, of Halliwell Bleachworks, manager, for refusing to fulfil a contract entered into by him to become Mr Whittaker's manager. The action has been compromised because at the defendant's request by his paying the plaintiff's costs and a sum of £10, to be handed over to the Bolton Dispensary, and which sum has accordingly been paid to the treasurer of that institution.
