THE University of Bolton has taken action to make sure that youngsters from less well-off families are not priced out of studying for a degree.

It has appointed its own student funding adviser.

Will Smith will explain to students what financial assistance is available.

His appointment follows the university's decision to charge the maximum amount of £3,000-per-year in tuition fees.

The university is concerned that the fees may put some students off from applying for a place.

Mr Smith said he would help parents and students to understand the financial implications of going into higher education.

The announcement of the new post has coincided with a launch of a Government advertising campaign highlighting the financial assistance available for those wanting to go into higher education.

A poll commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills revealed that the biggest concern among local students planning to go to university was money.

To help some families with tuition fees, which come into force in September next year, the University of Bolton has also launched a scholarship

Sarah Riches, the Dean of Students at the university, said: "Every new student from a partner college will receive at least £700 a year for every year of their course, regardless of family earning power.

"Those from the poorest families can receive up to £1,000. Additional Government grants are also available.

"The new tuition fees are not paid until the student has finished studying and is working, but we do understand the concerns of potential students and their families.

Seven sixth form schools and colleges from Bolton and the surrounding area have signed up to the scholarship scheme and three more are expected to sign in the next few weeks.

They are: Holy Cross College, Bury; Bury College, Bury; Bolton Sixth Form College, Bolton Community College; Salford College; Pendleton College and Westhoughton Sixth Form.

Prospective students can contact Mr Smith on 01204 903497.
