A LORRY driver was cut from his cab and taken to hospital with head and leg injuries after a head-on smash with another heavy goods vehicle.

A Dixons Skips HGV and a Chadwick Waste and Scrap lorry were involved in the crash in Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, around 1.30pm on Tuesday. The driver of the skip vehicle was trapped in his cab.

Firefighters worked alongside the Enhanced Rescue Unit, which specialises in cutting people from vehicles.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "One of the drivers has been taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with head and leg injuries. The other was not injured."

Chapeltown Road was closed for more than six hours at its junction with Bromley Cross Road.

Residents are calling on Bolton Council to restrict parking on the street. The accident happened in front of Elizabeth Coless house. She said: "Parking on this road is horrendous. There are no restrictions and people double-park all along the street. There has been an accident waiting to happen for a while."

Doug Farnworth, who also lives on Chapeltown Road, said: "I spoke to the Highways Department last Thursday complaining about the parking on this street because its been getting slowly worse. Now its just horrendous."

Mr Farnworth said the road was used by commuters who get the train into Manchester from Bromley Cross station. Turton High School is on the same road and that also causes congestion, he added.

A Bolton Council spokesman said they were aware of the problem and were looking at proposals to ease the situation.
