GARY Roberts is already auditioning for his next appearance on Soccer AM.

The Accrington Stanley wide man made his debut airing on the popular Saturday morning football programme's "Showboat" feature.

The 21-year-old was in prestigious company, as a clip of his trick which led to Paul Mullin's opener in the win at Grays Athletic was shown alongside flashes of brilliance by Barcelona's Ronaldinho and Swansea showman Lee Trundle.

And Roberts has told Stanley fans to expect plenty more.

"I work on tricks all the time in training, and if the game's open and you are allowed a bit of space on the ball then you can try them out," he said.

"There's still more to come.

"I know Lee Trundle quite well and spoke to him after the Grays game. He said he'd heard that I'd done a trick so I was made up that it was on Showboat because I watch it every week and Lee's always on it."

Not only did Roberts' neat backheel between two Grays defenders set up Mullin's goal and inspire a 2-1 win, it made England National Game XI manager Paul Fairclough sit up and take notice as well.

Roberts was selected for the initial 22-man squad for last week's international away to Belgium but failed to join Stanley team-mate Ian Craney in the final 16.

But the former Crewe and Welshpool player is hoping to make the cut when the National Game squad is in action again next year.

"When I saw myself in the 22 I thought there must be a chance, especially as I'd scored in the three games I was supposed to have been watched in, so I was gutted not to be in the squad," Roberts said.

"But maybe next time. It's always a good thing to represent your country doing anything.

"I'll just have to keep working hard."
