OF all the issues that we should have been debating at the last full council on November 2, I would not have put a motion supporting an early day motion top of the agenda as Labour did.

It was not a surprise therefore that Labour and the Liberal party should get together to attack the Conservatives (Letters, Nov 17).

We recognise how important it is for everyone to do their best to combat climate change. That is why we abstained from voting. We feel it is not only unnecessary for government legislation, but is also rather foolish to try and pass laws about a subject which is more of a natural phenomenon.

If you consult geologists who specialise in these events, they will tell you that the main cause of climate change is that the sun is getting hotter, and whatever actions the human race takes will make very little difference.

That is why we don't agree that the government should be passing laws, they should carry on as they are now, advising the public on the best action to take.

On the printed agenda for the meeting, Councillor Wayne Campbell was listed as seconding the motion; not only did he not second the motion but he did not take part in the debate. Perhaps he realised that it would have been hypocritical for him to have done so, bearing in mind the fact that in one month in late summer this year, he flew to China and America. On reaching America he hired a gas guzzler. Hardly the actions of someone concerned about climate change.

We think we should be debating issues such as school closures, education finance and social services, which are in such a financial mess that a project board has been set up to try to solve their problems. These are some of the issues we think should be debated, before climate change is debated. Perhaps Labour do not want these important issues raised in full council in case the public learn what is really going on in Bury.
