PORTUGUESE youth star Ricardo Vaz Te has scored a stunning 87th minute equaliser within 60 seconds of coming on as substitute for Wanderers in their UEFA Cup Group H clash in Guimaraes.

Wanderers' 3,000 fans had earlier been stunned into silence when the home team took the lead six minutes from time.

PREVIEW: 'Captain Birdseye' Kev on trophy trail

KEVIN Nolan is in a rush to crown his captaincy of Bolton Wanderers with a trophy.

The new Reebok skipper leads his team-mates into European action in Portugal, determined to keep the good times rolling.

Wanderers have never had it so good - riding high in the Premiership, hotly-tipped to reach the last eight of the Carling Cup and knowing victory over Vitoria SC in Guimaraes will secure a place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

And Nolan - the rising star of the Reebok - continues to aim high.

"Whatever competition we are in, we always have a good chance of winning," he said. "We've got a massive six weeks coming up with cup competitions and the Premier League, which could make or break our season.

"Hopefully, at the end of it, well be in the quarters or semi-finals of the Carling Cup, the last 32 of the UEFA cup and still in the top five or six in the Premier League.

"We are focused on what we want to do this season - getting that European spot again and staying in all the cups for as long as we can.

"We want to get to all the finals and nothing would be more fantastic than lifting a trophy for Bolton Wanderers - and, hopefully, we can do that this season."

Nolan, who enjoyed a five-match winning streak as stand-in skipper in Jay Jay Okocha's absence, was officially installed as club captain on Sunday after a meeting with Sam Allardyce.

At 23 he is the youngest captain in the Premiership and admits to having been shocked by the development.

"I had butterflies in my stomach when the gaffer told me," he said. "It was like when I was told for the first time that I'd got a professional contract.

"I wasn't expecting it at all and it hasn't really sunk in. I just hope I can do as good a job as Jay Jay has done and take the club forward as he did.

"Jay Jay was the first to congratulate me, saying he hoped I could take us a step further. He's a true gentleman and I can't speak too highly of him after what he's done for me.

"Nothing's changed really. There's a mutual respect among all the players and the staff too. There will be times this season when I will need Jay Jay and the likes of Gary Speed because this is all so new to me that.

"I don't know about skipper or captain, at the moment I feel more like Captain Birds Eye."

Nolan, a graduate of the Reebok academy, has been a key figure as Wanderers have established themselves as a Premiership force, enhancing his reputation as one of the game's most effective, free-scoring midfield players.

He continues to set high standards, for himself and for his team, and sees no limits to what they can achieve.

But he is taking nothing for granted and, mindful of the mini-crisis they went through at this stage last season, when they took just three points from 10 games, is anxious for Wanderers to maintain their winning habit.

"Bolton Wanderers has always aimed to be better each season and I believe we can do better again this season," he said. "That means winning a trophy, getting into Europe again or finishing higher than sixth.

"That's always going to be on our agenda.

"The big test for me now is to keep the performances going. Getting the captaincy is one thing, retaining it and making sure my performances don't slip and our performances as a team don't slip is going to be vital for us at this crucial period of the season."
