PARTYGOERS are being warned to take care when catching a taxi during the festive season.
Licensing officers at Bolton Council are advising people to check the vehicle is legitimate before they get in.
Every taxi should hold a valid licence to operate across the borough. Public hire vehicles - also known as hackney carriages or more commonly, black cabs - will also have an illuminated sign, white licence plates and can be flagged down on the street.
Private hire vehicles, which have yellow licence plates, must be pre-booked through their operator.
A council spokesman said: "If it doesnt have the required plates or bear company details, do not get in you may be risking your life.
"Make sure your driver is wearing a photo ID badge.
"If you are worried or afraid, you will find the operators name on the front doors and front and rear windows. Make a note of it."
The council ensures all vehicles are subject to inspection and all drivers are subject to a criminal records to ensure they are "fit and proper" to drive a taxi.
