WHAT a fantastic performance by Westhoughton High School with their Christmas play "Sleep Comrades Sleep".

It told the story of the Pretoria Pit disaster on December 21, 1910, in which 344 men and boys were killed. This was a piece of history which happened right on our doorstep. By the end of the performance, we felt thoroughly educated, entertained and inspired.

I am sure if this play was to be shown in a public theatre it would sell out every night. Not just because of its relevance to local people, but because of the outstanding representations by the young actors, musicians and dancers, and particularly the moving and powerful performances in the final scenes.

The website created by the children to provide additional information demonstrates just how much research and hard work has gone into the project.

Thank you, and well done to all concerned!
