MORE "bobbies on the beat" have halved theft on Bury Market in the last year.
A recent plainclothes operation by the council's security personnel proved a great success with no crime reported on the market site itself. Staff helped arrest two shoplifters who had stolen goods from a business in Kay Gardens.
Inspector David McElroy, of Bury police, said: "Working with the stalls and stores, the police have given out crime prevention advice and the market regularly uses the tannoy to relay safety reminders to shoppers.
"Considering the huge numbers of visitors who come to Bury Market, 12 million annually, incidents are few and far between. Over the last two months the market has hosted the BurySafe campaign, co-ordinated by the crime reduction advisor for Bury Police Station. Plain clothes police officers are also in operation."
