LEIGH Athletic earned the local bragging rights along with a semi-final spot after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over local rivals Atherton Town in the quarter final of the Gylchrist Cup.
Leigh got off to a flyer when Tony Lewis capitalised on a defensive mistake after five minutes. Lewis then doubled the score just five minutes later after a good run and cool finish.
Leigh's dominance was rewarded towards the end of the half when Matt Wilkinson converted a cross shot from Phillips to send the home side in three-up at half time. Leigh kept a tight defensive line in the second half to ensure the victory. Man of the match was Lewis.
The second team earned a vital point away at title-chasing East Manchester. After trailing 2-1 Danny Wrigley earned a last minute penalty. Andrew Miller showed nerves of steel to drill home the spot kick to keep up the title push.
The third team beat Wilmslow 5-4 with goals from Tony Evans (2)and a Mickey Edwards hat-trick, MoM Chris Green.
