POLICE are appealing to residents in Prestwich and Whitefield to keep on their guard against unscrupulous doorstep criminals.
Over the last few weeks there has been an increase in burglaries across the borough, particularly targeting the elderly. Thieves claiming to be from the water board, gas board and Bury Council have tricked their way into homes and made off with various amounts of cash.
Gaynor Mason, Bury's Crime Reduction Advisor, said: "These offenders are very plausible and will give any number of reasons to gain access to people's homes. We should all be vigilant and never let anyone in, without first checking they have the correct identification."
Anyone who would like any further crime prevention advice can contact Bury police's Crime Reduction Advisor department on 0161 856 8046.
