TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill as pupils from threatened high schools took their protest to the streets of Bury town centre - and earned a surprise reprieve.

Parents and teachers added their voice to the campaign to stop the closure of Broad Oak, Derby and Prestwich because of falling pupil numbers over coming years.

Leading from the front was Prestwich headteacher Geoff Barlow, who jumped into the throng to lead the chants of 'Save our schools!' before gridlocked cars and buses. Hundreds then packed into the Elizabethan Suite at Bury Town Hall on Tuesday night to make their views known.

And they were in for a surprise, when members of the council's ruling executive decided to defer a decision.

Councillors said that key questions had not yet been answered: how closures would affect social cohesion, and how they would affect the education of current pupils.
