BURY Market has been voted the best by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).

The town defeated Bradford, Belfast, Chesterfield and Staffordshire Moorlands in the first national final under the 'Markets and Modern Living' category.

The markets were judged on criteria which included: marketing and budgetary controls, operational standards, customer services, market development, staff development, trader liaison and an ability to determine the future.

Last year Bury was one of only two national markets included in the Independent's Cool Food Guide and the year before it was voted a Top Ten UK Food Market. It has bucked a national trend which has seen visitor numbers decline.

Markets manager John Ayres said it was the best accolade that any market operator could get. He was presented with the award by Thomasina Miers, the BBC's 2005 masterchef, at a ceremony in Birmingham last month.
