GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has been awarded more than £1 million to help reduce deaths by fire.

The fire prevention grant, worth £1,132,380, has been awarded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and will be spent over the next two years.

The cash will support the fire service's campaign to reduce fire-related deaths among vulnerable people.

Statistics show that older people, ethnic minority groups, people with learning or physical difficulties, and those living in poor or temporary housing are most at risk.

The funding can also be used in campaigns against anti-social behaviour and arson attacks.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue has an accidental fire death rate which is more than 25 per cent above the national average.
