NEW powers are to be given to Police Communuty Support Officers to tackle low level crime and anti-social behaviour in a move welcomed by Bolton North East MP David Crausby.

The PCSOs will be given powers to issue fixed penalty notices for offences such as graffiti and they will be able to confiscate alcohol and drug, it has been announced by the Home Office.

They will also be able to take part in truancy sweeps.

Mr Crausby said: "Introducing a set of robust powers for PCSOs will allow them to contribute fully to neighbourhood policing and handle more issues on the spot, without recourse to a police constable.

"It will also help the public understand exactly what PCSOs can do and free up more police time to deal with serious offences."
