THEFTS of grid covers from roads have been branded 'potentially fatal'.
An operation has been launched in Chorley to catch the thieves, who have been targeting the gully grates.
They are being sold to scrapyards for about £1 each, but Chorley Council says they cost £150 to replace and the holes left could lead to a fatal accident.
Local residents are being urged by the police and Lancashire County Council to report any thefts.
