CHILDREN brought to life fictional characters from the books shortlisted for Bolton's second Children's Book Award

Workshops were held for secondary schoolchildren reading the seven novels to judge which best deserves the title.

During the two-day event at the University of Bolton, pupils from 12 schools took part in creative writing, drama and photography.

Children explored each of the books in detail, wrote their own endings and re-enacted their favourite scenes.

Cllr Bob Ronson, executive member for adult services, said: "The short-listed books are from a wide range of reading and writing styles.

"The workshops are a great way of capturing children's imagination and provide a great opportunity to help them to make a decision on their 2006 winner."

Books shortlisted are: Indigo Blue by Cath Cassidy; The Invisible Friend by Louise Arnold; The Sign of the Angel, Devil's Trade by Alan MacDonald; Stuff by Jeremy Strong; Jimmy Coates: Killer by Joe Craig; Demons of the Ocean, Vampirates by Justin Somper and Worm in the Blood by Thomas Bloor.

Author, Robert Muchamore who won last year with his book The Recruit said: "Youngsters are often reluctant to try something new.

"The Bolton Book Award is a brilliant opportunity for young readers to explore genres and authors they would usually ignore, then discuss the books among their peers and enjoy the competitive element of voting for a favourite at the end."

The winner will be announced later this year at the Children's Book Award Festival.
