I do not usually write to newspapers, but I feel so strongly about the plight of Constance Williams (Who will be looking after me now, Wednesday, February 8) and others in the same situation as her.

My mum, who was physically disabled, was able to stay in her own home, cared for by her family and assisted by the outstanding carers from the Horwich Team at Bolton Metro, who helped us to look after her. At first my mum was very apprehensive about strangers letting themselves into her home, but these strangers soon became friends and she looked forward to their daily visits. There was always continuity with the same Bolton Metro Carers, but at the weekend when the cover was by agencies, it was different people calling on each occasion and this was very unsettling. The regular carers would know exactly what my mums needs were but the agency carers just referred to a check-list.

I can fully appreciate why the Bolton Metro carers would not want to start working a 7-day-a-week rota. They would have initially been employed working shifts Monday to Friday from early morning until late evening and it is disgraceful that they are now being told to work a full 7-day-a-week rota or have no job. Whatever has happened to care in the community?
