Two years ago the council was criticised for having the worst record in Greater Manchester, after the Local Government Ombudsman had found five cases where maladministration had caused injustice.

OPERATIONS at North-west hospitals could grind to a half unless controversial plans for a new clinical waste incinerator in Bolton get the go-ahead soon, it is claimed.

A consortium of 11 health trusts, including Bolton, together with White Rose Environmental, says the new incinerator is needed to enable hospitals to meet tough new standards on clinical waste disposal to be introduced next month.

DAMAGE amounting to £2,500 was caused and production seriously affected by a mill fire alleged to have been started by an employee. It was stated at Bolton Borough Magistrates Courts today, when George Thomas Collins, aged 25, labourer, 205 Chorley New Road, was accused of maliciously setting fire to raw cotton at the Brownlow Fold Mill of Richard Harwood and Son Ltd, Darley Street, Bolton, on Monday.

A FINE of £50 was imposed by Bolton Borough Magistrates today, on the firm of Bedding (Bolton) Ltd, mattress and upholstery manufacturers, Shiffnall Street, Bolton, for not having one of their machines securely fenced, as a result of which an employee, John Smith, 11 Hesketh-ave., received severe injuries to his right hand, which had to be amputated.

100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News September 16, 1905

TWO DARING attempts at escape were made at Nottingham yesterday. A lad, named Harold Mills, was espied cutting lead on the top of a factory roof, and for two hours he defied capture by dodging about the chimney-stacks.

The second case was that of an elderly man, who, when about to be arrested for robbing a garden, sprang over a bridge and fell forty feet. Strange to say, he was unhurt, and was sent to prison for a week.
