From the Evening News, October 5, 1995: REPAIRS of main roads throughout the town have put the brake on motorists - and turned Bolton into a rush hour "slow-go area.

The four major road schemes have left Bolton town centre "ringed" by road cones.

THE race is on to set up Boltons first multi-screen cinema.

There are three ambitious leisure complexes in the pipeline, including one at the Bolton Wanderers, sport village scheme at Red Moss, Horwich, another planned for the Bolton greyhound stadium, and a third, a £15 million development, in the Tonge Valley.

Lion of Vienna Nat Lofthouse is one of a host of legendary soccer stars taking part in a new BBC series.

Kicking and Screaming features a galaxy of football heroes including Sir Stanley Matthews, Tommy Lawton and Tom Finney.

Nat and his contemporaries are set to pop up throughout the six-part series, which charts the history of the game.

Programme two is devoted to Nat and his contemporaries as the "Golden Age of football is celebrated.

TWO irate neighbours are to call in the local government Ombudsman to investigate alleged "gross maladministration by Bolton Council.

They are up in arms after the planning committee gave the go-ahead on a close vote to build a big house on land next to their homes.

They have condemned the scheme as a "planning absurdity since it means building a new access to the house off an existing driveway.

A MASSIVE Billy Graham-type crusade is being launched in Bolton later this month.

Mass rallies will be held nightly at Bolton Town Hall, and during the day the team of evangelists leading the fortnight-long crusade will be visiting schools and colleges in the area.

A JOINT meeting in London today of the Executive Council of the 19 unions affiliated to the National Federation of Building Trade Operatives decided to apply for a wage increase of 4d. an hour.

THE case for over 600,000 farm workers, who are claiming a minimum wage of £7 a week, was put before the Central Agricultural Wages Board at the Ministry of Agriculture in London today.

A YARD agents traveller died with shocking suddenness about twelve oclock today, whilst on his rounds in Bolton, the sadness being accentuated by the fact that the unfortunate man was in the company of his employers, a French man.

FOR riding a bicycle without light at Farnworth, on September 23rd, Richard Winstanley, Farnworth, was fined 10s., including costs, by the County Justice, this morning.

Henry Atkinson and William Isherwood, jun., teamers, Bolton, were similarly fined for riding asleep at Kearsley on September 22nd.
