ARMED robbers fled with a large quantity of cash after a raid at a Post Office in Adlington.

Two masked men, brandishing a sledge hammer, ran into Higher Adlington Post Office in Chorley Road on Friday as a cash delivery was being made at 10.30am.

They threatened the postmistress and security guard before escaping in a green Ford Mondeo which had been stolen earlier during a burglary in Bolton.

It was found minutes later on fire, in an alleyway between The Avenue and Farm Avenue.

Detectives believe the gang then fled in a second car which they are trying to trace.

Officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and are appealing for witnesses. Det Insp Brian Quinn, of Chorley CID said: "No-one was injured in the raid.

"There were no customers in the Post Office at the time, just a salesman who was speaking to the postmistress.

"We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

"We are particularly keen to find witnesses who saw the second vehicle."

The robbers were wearing balacalvas and dark clothing.

Anyone with information should call Chorley CID on 01257 246 267 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
