BADMINTON: Deane A lifted the Jane Fletcher Memorial Cup after beating Forrest B by four points.

The two teams met in the league a week earlier, with Forrest winning 16-2, but Deane turned the tables with their determination to get a result.

Deane’s top couple, Mandy Molloy and Suresh Patel, claimed the first game of the night 21-16, but Christine Seddon and Pete Taylor fought back to take the second game 21-18. Forrest’s top pairing of Carolyn Wood and Kirk Pendlebury claimed the next games 21-15, 21-17 against Teresa Gough and Mike Wood.

Forrest showed their dominance in the levels but in several games they conceded quite a few points before they remembered that they had to keep the opposition’s points to a minimum.

This was illustrated as top men Kirk Pendlebury and Paul Hardman won their first game to 16 and then showed more determination in the second to win to six.

Similar events occurred at top ladies as Wood, partnering Claire Nelson, claimed their games to 12 and nine.

Third verses third mixed had to be played at the end of the night, and it proved to be a nail-biting finale.

Forrest’s Nelson and Hardman won the first game 21-12, and believed if they won the second to a similar score they would win the match.

Janice Jackson and Geoff Taylor had other ideas, and they claimed the final game 21-18.

The handicap envelope revealed plus 120 for Deane, which saw them claim the trophy with a 374-370 scoreline.

Moorside D have repeated history. Two years ago they narrowly missed promotion from E section and looked for consolation in the cup, and they have done the same this year.

In the final of the Robert Cup, they faced the undefeated C Division winners, Forrest C. Forrest’s Judith Mealor and Tony Augustyniak claimed the opening games 21-14, 21-15 against Lindsay Furness and Andy Lees, while Christine Travis and John Mealor claimed the second sets 21-13, 21-8 against Lillian Croston and Luke Murray.

At third mixed, Moorside’s Amanda Bracegirdle and Andy Barton upset Forrest’s Karen Holden and Mahendra Patel as they claimed 17 points in the first game and won the second 21-13.

At top men’s, Moorside claimed a another game against Forrest, a team who have only conceded 36 games all season, as Murray and Barton beat Augustyniak and Patel 21-19 in the first and claimed 16 points in the second.

The final men’s of the night saw the Forrest men win to eight and six, but this proved too little, too late as Moorside added a handicap of plus 180 to their impressive 241, to win the match 421-373.
