A GIANT replica World Cup trophy made entirely from paper was used to kick off a recycling promotion in Bolton town centre.

The five-foot creation was unveiled with the help of Wanderers mascot Lofty the Lion in Victoria Square.

Shoppers were asked to test their footie skills using balls made from paper collected in Bolton.

According to organisers, people produce more recyclable waste, such as pizza boxes and beer cans during the World Cup, and Bolton Council wants to remind people not to just throw it away.

Cllr Elaine Sherrington, Bolton's Executive Member for Recycling and Waste Management, said: "I'm thrilled the council is staging a World Cup recycling event to celebrate the tournament kicking off.

"Given that we generate even more waste during a major sporting event, I think this is the perfect opportunity to remind people to do their bit."

UPM Shotton, Bolton Council's paper recycling partner, puts £1 into the "Race to Recycle" prize fund for every tonne of paper collected across Greater Manchester.

The three councils that have increased their paper recycling the most will share the prize money, which can be spent on community projects.

Last year, Bolton Council won and spent the money on a new play area in Luton Street, Great Lever. This year's awards will be presented at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on Wednesday, June 28.
