A PAIR of arsonists who destroyed 10 vehicles when they went on a wrecking spree have been told they could be facing jail.

Paul Lunn, aged 25, and Zak Alldread, aged 18, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered, when they appeared at Bolton Crown Court yesterday.

Lunn, of Sundridge Close, Bolton, and Alldread, of Preston Road, Chorley, were the arsonists responsible for a spate of car fires in the Hulton Lane and Beaumont Chase areas of Bolton in January.

Their method was to shove flaming pieces of paper or firelighters through the front grilles of cars.

It is not yet clear what motivated the two men to go on the apparently random spree of arson attacks.

But Recorder Stephen Riordan QC adjourned the sentencing until July 5 to allow for the preparation of psychiatric reports.

He warned the two men: “The fact that I am adjourning the case for reports of this nature does not mean that there’s any kind of promise of any particular type of sentence.

“Any court dealing with the case will have custodial sentences very much at the front of its mind and all options will be considered.”

Lunn and Alldread pleaded guilty to setting fire to three cars, a Lexus, a Toyota, and a Honda, on January 14.

Then on January 20 they targeted seven cars in just over one hour. They struck at: Aldred Street, Middle Hulton, a van containing thousands of pounds worth of photocopier parts and a Rover 420si, parked on the drive; St Helens Road, Daubhill, two Vauxhall Corsas; Muirfield Close, Beaumont Chase, a Fiesta parked on the driveway; Turnberry, Beaumont Chase, a Vauxhall Vectra; Newstead Drive, Over Hulton, a minibus.

Crews from Bolton Central, Horwich, Atherton and Farnworth were all mobilised to deal with the fires while the police helicopter was scrambled.

Neighbours who have been targeted by arsonists before called for security cameras to be installed and for more police patrols. Firefighters said the arson attacks could have had fatal consequences.
