A GARDENER who rescued a stricken starling has warned other people to keep an eye out for injured animals this summer.

Stephen Thompson, aged 31, of Ashworth Lane in Bank Top, called the RSPCA when he found the starling lying injured in his garden on Monday afternoon.

He said: “I didn’t know what to do at first. It couldn’t fly and it was tweeting a lot.

“I took the bird inside and put it in a shoe box with some water.

“The RSPCA picked it up later in the day. It is lucky I saw the poor little thing.

“People should watch out for injured animals and call the RSPCA if they see one.”

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “If you find an injured wild animal, watch it for a short while to find out how badly hurt it really is.

“Then either contact us or find a vet or wildlife rehabilitator near you. If possible, contain the animal before calling.”

The RSPCA can be contacted on 0300 1234 999.
