I HAVEN’T looked forward to finding out who will be number one quite so much since I used to sit and record Radio One on a Sunday evening as a teenager with my Casio tape deck.

Will Fabio Capello stick with Rob ‘Hand of Clod’ Green? Or will David James get the nod; reinforcing the notion that sulking really does work.

I’d personally like to see Green retain his place, thus ending the argument over who is number one keeper once and for all. It would do his confidence no end of good, and would mean minimum disruption for a back four that is already shorn of Ledley King.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions in Capello’s squad and I’m not sure that will change until we have played more testing opposition, which at the moment looks likely to come in the form of Ghana or Germany in the second round.

But if anyone thinks England have problems, spare a thought for the French, who looked a right mess against Mexico last night.

Their brilliant keeper Hugo Lloris aside, I don’t think there is a single player who would have got in the French teams who won back-to-back major tournaments at the start of the millennium.

And speaking of yesterday’s action, it was great to see two Wanderers in action – with Chung-Yong Lee scoring a great goal against Argentina.

Danny Shittu did little wrong against Greece either, although his tournament looks likely to last just one more game.
