WHAT have Fabio Capello, Steve McLaren, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Kevin Keegan, Glenn Hoddle, Graham Taylor and Sir Bobby Robson (circa 1982-1989) got in common?

They have all gone from being regarded as good managers to bad ones in the eyes of the great British public after a spell as England boss.

Which begs the obvious question: why don’t we give Joe ‘Tap Room Tommy’ Public a go in the England hot seat as he seems to know so much.

You can’t just blame the man in the street, of course. It is not only his infinite wisdom which makes him the analytical and tactical footballing superior of men who have only won league titles – in the case of Capello, nine of them in two different countries, and a Champions League trophy as well – he has a little help from hindsight and the rabble-rousing popular national press.

The fact we are even having a debate over whether Capello should continue as England manager sums up our country’s kneejerk, bite-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face mentality.

The fact the FA are actually considering ditching Capello sums up the major problem which has afflicted our national team for the last 30 years.

Keep changing the manager. Yeah, that’s the answer.

It’s an easy one, but not one which will enable one good man – and there have been many – to get to the top of his game by learning the job through success and failure.

The problem is the public and the press will not allow failure. You’re all right if you keep winning, as Terry Venables found when he lost just one of his 23 matches in charge, and that on a penalty shootout in 1996.

The fact that he is the only England manager since 1982 not to be regarded as a national disaster is not an indictment of the managers or the teams, but of the people who spout such rubbish.

I didn’t hear anyone doubting Capello when he won nine out of 10 matches to qualify for the World Cup.

It’s certainly true that Capello failed at the Finals. He did not get the best out of his players and set the team out in a way which played to Germany’s strengths in the last 16 debacle.

Is that a reason for putting a new man at the helm to start all over again?

I suppose in this country, it is.
