HE’S got three PlayStations, he’s rubbish at golf and he once met an international football star but didn’t know who he was.

These were just a few of the quirky facts students at Bolton College learned about World Champion boxer Amir Khan when he took part in a question and answer session on the first day of term at the new building in Deane Road.

The former student, who attended the college’s old Manchester Road site six years ago, dropped in to look around the new multi-million pound facility and welcome the new intake.

The Bolton boxer is taking a special interest, as the college’s new Boxing Academy will be based at his Gloves gym in Prince Street.

Yesterday, Amir spoke openly about his sport, his family and his celebrity lifestyle.

And in an unusually candid moment, the 23-year-old admitted his life could have taken an altogether different path, had his father not got him interested in boxing.

“I was eight years old,” he said. “I was very hyperactive and my dad took me to the gym so I would burn energy so when I got home I’d go to bed.

“But I’ve never looked back.

Boxing has changed my life. If it wasn’t for boxing I wouldn’t be in this position now. I could have been in prison or I could have been doing stupid things. There is knife crime and gun crime but boxing has kept me away from all that.”

Who has been his toughest opponent?

“My mum,” he joked, before saying it was not the man he lost against, Colombian Breidis Prescott, but sparring partner Manny Pacquiao.

Has he met many celebrities?

“I’ve met David Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Katie Price.

“I’m not very good with faces though. I was at the Formula One once and people were having their photo taken with this guy.

“My manager said do you want a photo, but I didn’t know who it was, so I said no.”

The man in question turned out to be Premier League star Michael Essien — so when Amir found out, he sheepishly went back to the Chelsea midfielder and asked for a photo.

Finally, Amir said he was starstruck when he met boxing legend Mohammed Ali.

When the pair met, he said he was tongue-tied and sat with the former champ for a full 10 minutes without saying a word. After the question and answer session, Amir said: “It is the best college I have ever seen. The work they have put into this place is amazing. I have to say all the students here are very lucky.”

The new building is part of a £90 million scheme which sees Bolton College and Bolton Sixth Form College side by side in the heart of the town’s £300 million Innovation Zone.
