A great performance and a great point.

I reckon Wanderers ended up edging what was a very close contest and we could have taken all three points had referee Mike Dean seen fit to award Wanderers at least one of two decent penalty shouts.

Chungy perhaps went down a bit too easily for his claim, when Wanderers were 1-0 down, but I thought the foul on Johan Elmander after the Swede’s excellent run, later on in the first half, definitely deserved a spot kick.

Sadly, before all that, we gifted Villa the first goal of the game. It was a clumsy challenge by Fabrice Muamba and an appalling wall that needed to be much stronger – our stand-in goalie, Shaggy, as I believe he is known, had no chance.

But after a poor first 20 minutes, Wanderers really came into the game. It was a cracking goal that must have delighted Owen Coyle – Chungy, Stuart Holden and Martin Petrov combining to give Kevin Davies a great opportunity which he finished with all the composure in the world. It was exactly the kind attacking, passing play which the manager is trying to instil into the team.

Before Super Kev’s excellent strike, the captain went ever so close with an equally impressive effort, when he pulled off a delightful Cruyff turn followed by a delicately placed shot which almost curled inside Brad Friedel’s far post – I don’t think I’m going over the top to suggest it was Henry-esque.

Holden had one of his best games in a white shirt and Petrov too, although he still looks a touch off the pace, was always a threat.

As the game wore on, impressively, it was the Whites, not Villa, who were pushing for the win. Coyle’s decision to bring on Mark Davies for Muamba, showed his attacking intentions but if we were really going all out for victory, then Ivan Kalsnic or our new 19-year-old Rodrigo would have been welcome introductions.

Still, it was a well-earned point and certainly a result we would have settled for before the match.

The Villa fans’ chorus of boos on the final whistle said it all - they clearly weren't happy.

Teams like Villa expect to beat teams like Bolton - but the big boys will soon realise that Wanderers are once again a Premier League force to be reckoned with.
