ALICE Fitton maintained her position as Britain's best teenage multi-sport athlete by claiming two European and two British gold medals.

The 16-year-old Olympic hope capped an outstanding season with a dominant performance at the European Under-17s Modern Triathlon Championships in Bulgaria.

With Europe being the dominant force in the multisport events of modern triathlon (run, swim, shoot), tetrathlon (plus fencing) and pentathlon (plus horseriding), the Atherton girl was effectively competing against the best in the world.

And she proved herself to be the best of the best, winning by a huge margin, having given herself a massive lead in the swim and maintaining it in the combined run/shoot event.

She followed up by leading the British team to victory in the relay event. The team was second at the end of the swim section, but way back in seventh when Alice’s team-mates had completed their 2k run/shoot legs and Alice took over for the anchor leg.

But she showed her class by working her way through the field to cross the line first.

Her European success followed more glory at the British Under- 17s Tetrathlon Championships and the British Under-17s Pentathlon Championships.

She is considered by British pentathlon officials as being too young to compete at the London Olympics in two years but is pencilled in as a strong contender for the next Games in Brazil four years later.

She has been national champion at modern triathlon, tetrathlon and pentathlon since she was 12 and earlier in the summer she was Britain’s best performer at the European Under-19s Tetrathlon Championships where she finished fifth in the individual event, leading her country to the gold medal, again in Bulgaria.
