West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo has urged the club’s supporters not to get too carried away after a better-than-expected start to the season.

Albion are sixth after six games, with their most recent result a stunning 3-2 win away to Arsenal last weekend.

Di Matteo insists tomorrow’s game against Wanderers will be just as tough as last week’s trip to the Emirates Stadium, and said the Reebok men were one of the teams they were targeting to compete with in their first season back in the top flight.

He said: “I hope the fans don’t get carried away by the Arsenal result.

“I hope they understand our position and see that Bolton is a difficult game.

“It’s one of the teams that is a competitor, even though they’ve been in the Premier League for many years.

“If we want to have a good season we need to be competitive against teams like them.”

Di Matteo hailed the efforts of Bolton counterpart Owen Coyle to change his side’s style of play, having gone some way to eradicating the Whites’ previous reputation as a very direct side.

“The way Bolton play is a bit of a mix,” the former Chelsea midfielder added.

“They can go very direct, as they have been for many years. They’re trying to mix it up and I think Owen Coyle has said that.

“It will take time for the club to match his philosophy – as happens when you go to a club who are used to something different.”
