BOLTON badminton player Jenny Wallwork still stands two chances of adding to her Commonwealth Games bronze after defeating Uganda and the Seychelles in one day in Delhi.

The 23-year-old, who helped England finish third in the team event earlier in the competition, scored victories with Gabby White in the women’s doubles and Nathan Robertson in the mixed doubles.

Wallwork and White progressed through the round of 32 with ease after defeating Bridget Bangi and Margaret Nankabirwa of Uganda 21- 7, 21-10.

The 2005 Scottish Open champion also teamed up with Robertson to crush Georgie Cupidon and Juliette Ah-Wan 21-5, 21-7 to reach the last 16.

“Obviously it was one of the easier rounds, so we've just got to focus, get on and get off really and hopefully we can keep playing well in the later rounds,” said Wallwork.

“We take it the same as very other match. We prepare well, warm up together and we go on court and we mean business.

“We want to show the other pairs we are ready to take anyone on really and be professional about it.

“It will be tough for us, the ones who are seeded one and two are ranked very high in the world. We just have to play our best.”

Meanwhile, Bury cyclist Simon Yates admitted total exhaustion after he made his road race debut at the Commonwealth Games.

Yates finished 45th – just over seven minutes behind Australian gold medallist Allan Davis after 168km of racing in searing 41 degree temperatures.

However, he admitted it was a dream to see top stars, including bronze medallist David Millar and sprint star Mark Cavendish at close quarters.

“It was such a hard race but I went out there and gave it everything I could,” he said.

“I’ve never raced over this distance before so it was very tough and I’m totally exhausted now.

“It’s a huge experience to see the big names like David and Cav and watching how they get among the riders and the tactics they use.

“They are achieving my goals in cycling and I don’t think I will ever realise how valuable the opportunity of racing with them is.”

In the wrestling, Bolton duo Craig Pilling and Mark Cocker lost in the quarter-finals yesterday.

Pilling, representing Wales, was beaten by Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson in the men’s freestyle 55kg, while his Bolton Olympic Wrestling club-mate, Cocker, lost to India’s Joginder Kumar in the men’s freestyle 120kg category.
