HEALTH services say they are coping well with winter pressures, but want the public’s help.

The Royal Bolton Hospital and NHS services in the community say this time of year is busy as always.

They are asking for people with flu-like symptoms to care for themselves at home — unless they need medical attention.

If they do need medical help they are advised to make sure they choose the correct service.

A spokesperson for the Royal Bolton Hospital said: “We are currently coping fine but we are busy.

“We are particularly asking normal healthy adults, not in an at risk group, who have flu symptoms, not to come to the hospital as their first port of call — only come if it is a medical emergency.

“If you think you have flu, stay at home and phone your GP.

“We are also asking visitors with flu not to come in until they are well. If you have an appointment and get flu, ring and cancel it.

“If you are worried about a child or there’s a medical emergency, come to A&E.

“People should make sure they have their flu jab, stock up on medicines and seek advice from a pharmacy or their GP if necessary.”

NHS Bolton, the primary care trust which oversees local services, is reiterating that people should think carefully about the service they use for all ailments and injuries.

A spokesperson said: “During this cold spell and especially over the Christmas holidays, it’s important that people use health services wisely to make sure we get the best from our NHS.

“Among other things, that means getting advice and treatment for minor problems from GP services, pharmacists, or the walk-in centre, and only using A&E and 999 when there is a major accident or life-threatening illness.”
