I didn’t expect us to get any change out of Chelsea or Liverpool – and as it turned out, we didn’t, but we were unlucky not to get a single point in the end.

We were undone by two dubious goals – both of which might have been called offside on another day – and two penalty claims.

Television replays showed Johan Elmander got the final touch before Joe Cole slotted home for Liverpool – but there is no way the referee’s assistant could have known that – it was a bad call and the TV cameras got the linesman off the hook.

Before Cole’s last gasp winner, which probably saved Roy Hodgson’s job, Wanderers had put up a spirited performance.

Rodrigo Moreno looked sharp in his second start for Whites and earned Wanderers the free kick which led to Kevin Davies excellent far post header just before half time.

We were well worthy of our 1-0 lead and it was a shame we didn’t get a chance to make Liverpool sweat in the second half.

Liverpool finally unlocked our defence just after the break with a moment of magic from Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

The midfielder’s sublime pass on the half volley combined with the Spaniard’s run and finish was superb – and you cannot criticise defenders when the goal is that good.

What you can criticise, however, is referee Kevin Friend’s failure to spot a blatant handball by Lucas when the score stood at 1-1.

It is the second time this season Liverpool have survived a penalty claim against us then gone on to win the game in the final minutes.

They say these things even themselves out over the course of a season, but when it happens twice against the same team, it sticks in the throat.
