A STAR-studded ball organised by Wanderers skipper Kevin Davies raised £138,000 for his charity helping children in Bolton.

And Bolton funnyman Peter Kay was the surprise guest of honour.

The top comedian agreed to take part at the last minute when Paddy McGuinness was unable to attend.

More than 600 people descended on the Reebok Stadium on Saturday to attend the glittering masquerade ball.

Among them were Wanderers manager Owen Coyle, players Stuart Holden and Ivan Klasnic, and Emmerdale actress Sammy Winward, who lives in Entwistle.

Guests enjoyed a packed night of entertainment, including music from singer Alexander Stewart and Britain’s Got Talent finalists Escala.

The headline act was McFly, who got involved when Bolton-born singer Danny Jones saw Mr Davies’ appeal for help on Twitter.

Wanderers striker Davies said: “McFly coming to perform for us for nothing was pretty special.

“They didn't want anything from us, it was just a case of ‘what do you need?’ “Danny wanted to perform in Bolton because he had never done it.”

DJ Spoony provided the music and a special casino event and after-party were held for VIPs.

An auction also took place, with prizes including artwork from Salvador Dali and Tracey Emin, a luxury holiday in Mauritius, Russell Crowe’s sword from the film Gladiator and a signed Muhammad Ali photograph.

The night was organised to raise money for Davies’ charity KiDs of Bolton, which was set up in October and is already helping youngsters and organisations in the town.

His wife, Emma, said: “It was a brilliant night and I am very pleased with how much money was raised.

“I don’t think we could have wished for it to be better.”

After taking a short break to recover from Saturday’s event, the couple will get to work planning more fundraisers.

Davies said: “It has been a lot of hard work planning everything and begging people to get involved.

“The support from everyone has been amazing.

We are hoping to run some smaller events over the next few months to raise more money
