A FAMILY bakers' pioneering stance has been praised for unlocking £500,000 of funding for charity.

Warburtons long-term association with Bolton Lads and Girls Club reached a new high this week when it was revealed that 10 years of support has unlocked more than £500,000 for the club's Outreach project.

The money has been accessed through Warburtons, because with every annual donation - around £15,000 a year -- the Lads and Girls Club has been able to generate support from other local companies and secured important revenue through government match-funding schemes.

Club chief Executive Jerry Glover said: "Back in 1996, Warburtons went where no sponsor had been before. To help us take a street project into housing estates around Bolton to encourage youngsters off the streets and into the club. There were no other backers at the time.

"The work which has taken place in the decade since we sent out the first minibus has been hugely successful, giving purpose to many teenagers reducing crime and giving choice and opportunity to hundreds of young people who previously had none.

"By demonstrating that we could attract funding from the private sector - and more companies have followed Warburtons lead - we were able to command greater funds from government and develop the work."

In the last 10 years the club has made contact with more than 500 teenagers. Today the Outreach service operates seven days a week and covers the majority of North Bolton.

In 2000, Warburtons' executive director, Ross Warburton, took on the presidency of the club.

He said: "The club does great work, giving teenagers self-belief in tough circumstances and a place to meet and socialise with their peers. There are a wide range of activities challenging youngsters and giving them new goals.

"Over the years it is has been truly inspiring to see how the club and its services have developed. I am glad to be playing my part in its success."
