IF Wanderers are destined to fall short in their plucky pursuit of European football, then Zat Knight knows the real improvement next season must come away from the Reebok Stadium.

Despite earning victories at Wigan, Fulham and Birmingham en route to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, the Whites’ form on the road in the Premier League has been a disappointment, bringing just two wins, against West Ham and Wolves.

There was yet more evidence of travel sickness on Wednesday night as Owen Coyle’s side laboured in a 3-0 defeat at Fulham. And Knight reckons the result at Craven Cottage highlighted the areas that need work if the team are to evolve into genuine European contenders.

“I think we have to expect more from ourselves because it’s easy to do things at home,” he said. “You’re more familiar with your surroundings.

“But if we had picked up a few more points away from the Reebok we’d be in a much better position, and that’s something we’ll have to concentrate on next season.

“We’ve got two more away games still to come, the derby against Blackburn, and then Blackpool, which is a bit of a derby as well. We have to get up for that and I do genuinely believe we can get maximum points from the next four games.

“But it’s the games like Fulham that we have to be up for if we want to be in the position where we could put ourselves into Europe.”
