A FORMER paper mill has been targeted by arsonists for the second time in less than two weeks.

The derelict site in Mytham Road, Little Lever, is due to be transformed into a major new eco-home development.

Firefighters spent yesterday tackling a blaze at the historic Creams Mill after a plastic hut was set on fire. Two crews, from Farnworth and Leigh fire stations, were called at about 11am after reports of a fire coming from the roof.

It comes after a pile of rubbish, containing the potentially deadly material asbestos, was set alight at the site on Sunday, April 17.

Firefighters believe that youths may have started the blaze.

Investigations are still underway into the latest fire but early indications are that it was deliberate.

The former Mondi Paper UK factory closed in 2004. Mergon Properties, which owns Bolton-based Westgate Estates, bought the mill for more than £1million in October 2007. In March 2010, plans were submittedfor a green housing estate containing 96 properties, with power sources including a hydro-generator and solar panels.
