MORE than 70 firefighters tackled a moorland blaze covering several square miles around Belmont.

The emergency services were called to the fire, off Belmont Road, just after 10am yesterday following reports of smoke drifting across nearby roads. Police closed Belmont Road as a precaution while firefighters used grass beaters and water packs to fight the fire. At the height of the blaze 14 crews were on the scene, including teams from Bolton who joined Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and crews from other Greater Manchester stations. A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received the call at 10.05am to the fire, which covered an area of several square miles and resulted in smoke being blown towards Chorley.”

There have been several moorland fires in and around Bolton over the past few weeks due to the dry and warm weather.
