Firefighters are still tackling a blaze affecting thousands of acres of moorland above Belmont.

Greater Manchester Fire Service said strong winds have been making the fire difficult to tackle.

Around 80 firefighters from Lancashire and Greater Manchester began fighting the fire just after 10am on Friday.

They were called following reports of black smoke drifting across local roads.

A fire spokesperson said: “Due to the changeable wind direction the fire was at times spreading faster than firefighters could keep up with it.

“The crews are expected to be dealing with this fire for several days, unless there is a change in the weather conditions and rain falls across this area.”

Walkers are advised to discard cigarettes properly and take away all glass bottles and rubbish.
