A FOOTBALLER who turned to violence and punched an opposing player has been ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work by a judge.

Bolton Crown Court heard that tempers flared at a Power League five-a-side game at Leverhulme Park on February 21.

David Morton, prosecuting, told how Mark Nicholson was playing for the Gerrards team and briefly made contact with his elbow with Simon Orrell, who was playing for the opposing IDNS team.

The incident led to IDNS scoring a goal and shortly afterwards an angry Nicholson, aged 23, grabbed Mr Orrell by the head and punched him several times.

Mr Orrell needed hospital treatment for a cut above his eye and had suspected nerve damage to his face.

Nicholson was sent off by the referee — and arrested by police six days later.

He admitted he had grabbed Mr Orrell, claiming the player had made remarks towards him.

The court heard that Nicholson told police: “People who are cocky need to be taught a lesson.”

Mr Morton added that Mr Orrell is due to get married in September and is concerned that the scar will show on wedding pictures.

Jared Ficklin, defending, said the incident was not pre-meditated and only one punch had connected with Mr Orrell.

Nicholson, a joiner, from Tonge Fold Road, Bolton, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Judge William Morris told him that if Mr Orrell’s injury had been any more serious he would be sending him to jail.

Nicholson was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work, attend a New Directions Activity programme and pay £500 compensation.
