PHIL Heaton will not be making any predictions about Bolton League success in fear of a team dressing down.

The Greenmount bowler has helped his side to the top of the table in the opening few weeks of the season, with the Bury boys holding the only unbeaten record in the competition.

With Heaton and skipper Mark Stewart taking a hatful of wickets with the ball, and runs coming from professional Asif Zakir, Anthony Harris and Andy Kerr, things look rosy in the Brandlesholme Road garden.

“We are playing some good cricket, but I will stop short of making predictions because I got told off for that last season,” said Heaton.

“We will take each week as it comes knowing that we have a good chance of achieving something.

“Myself and Mark are doing okay with the ball and the batting looks strong.

“Our pro Zakir broke records in the Bolton Association and he looks like he is warming up for a big innings soon. He is a very classy player.

“Daniel Metcalfe has also joined us this season and he is a good player, it is no surprise he is in the Lancashire Under-19s team.

“I expect we will do okay this summer.”

Heaton had a season to remember last year, taking 119 wickets in the campaign, and he hopes to continue giving batsmen around the town sleepless nights.

“I doubt I will ever repeat the success of last year,” said a modest Heaton. “Everything clicked and it was amazing, but the ball is still coming out well and I am happy with the way it is going.

“Mark is bowling particularly well at the moment and there is some good back-up if things don’t go to plan for us both.

“I suppose we need a bit of help now and again at our age.”

A good barometer of where Greenmount stand this season comes over the weekend when they visit Bradshaw in the league before tackling Farnworth in the Hamer Cup.

“Farnworth are the team to beat in all competitions,” said Heaton. “If we can finish above them in the league, we won’t be too far off.

“They have possibly got the best pro in the league and it is important to get him out if you are to stand any chance of beating them.”
