WORKING parents forced to make other childcare arrangements during Thursday’s strike action involving local schools might not have been particularly interested in the strikers’ grievances.
But there is a bigger picture — some of the teachers involved might well choose to leave the profession if the Government continues to insist that they should pay more for their pensions, work more years and receive less at the end of their working life.
That kind of exodus would not help future education provision at all. Teachers and the other public servants involved in this stand-off have every right to express their dismay and take action of this kind — legally — in the face of government intransigence.
There is a worrying 1980s feel to Conservative rumblings about making it more difficult for strikes to take place and appeals for untrained parents to take over in the classroom.
