EPL ICE HOCKEY: GREG Wood believes Guildford Flames will be the team to beat as the English Premier League gets ready to face off.

The former Manchester Phoenix forward, who won the title in 2010-2011 season before his move to Sheffield Steeldogs, says the title is theirs to lose due to their outstanding recruitment in the close season.

But he hasn’t ruled out his former employers as he knows spirit is strong in the camp.

“Guildford look strong again and Slough have built a solid team,” he said. “Milton Keynes will always be there or thereabouts as will Manchester – but they will have the added pressure of defending the title.

“After that there are a handful of teams who won’t be far off the leading pack. I think Bracknell, Swindon and Sheffield have really strengthened this summer and I wouldn't be shocked to see one of these teams surprising a few people.

“Realistically, I think it’s Guildford’s to lose with the way they have built their team this summer… but we say that most years. If Manchester have retained that fighting spirit from last year it could carry them through again but only time will tell. It’s good news for the league that all teams have strengthened and it should make it more entertaining than ever.”

Greg spent two seasons with Phoenix scoring more than 70 points before moving across the Pennines to his hometown club. He was the spark in a feisty second line in Manchester and many fans were upset to see him move on.

“It was really nice to spend the summer as a league champion as it is something every player wishes for when they set off on their league campaign in early September,” the 24-year-old said. “It was a tough decision to walk away but I felt I needed a new challenge in life.

“I am a personal trainer and I have built a client base from home. Playing hockey alongside gives me a perfect mixture of work and fun.”

Wood will get first-hand experience of the new-look Phoenix when the sides lock horns ahead of next week’s EPL face off in the traditional ‘War of the Roses’ matches.

Phoenix’ will travel to IceSheffield tomorrow (Saturday, 7.30pm) before hosting the Steeldogs at home on Sunday (5.30pm).

He continued: “We have a lot of talent in our locker room this year and look a lot more organised and well drilled on the ice. Andre [Payette – former Phoenix’ hardman] has really focused in on the team’s fitness this summer and this has shown in our two pre-season challenge games as we've matched two Elite League teams for long periods.

“I think people will be surprised by the hockey we play. The War of the Roes will give us a good indicator of both teams potential for the coming season.”
